Rain, Rain ... {Pain} Go Away!

We are wrapping up the month of April and, in keeping with its reputation, it has been full of rain. Unfortunately, that may also mean that its been full of pain for some orthopedic patients.

Why Do We Experience Aches & Pains on Rainy Days?

It's actually scientific. When rain begins to move into the forecast, barometric pressure tends to decrease. Believe it or not, that change is the culprit of the pain. When barometric pressure decreases, there's less pressure on muscles, tissue and tendons--causing it to expand. Joints are not used to that extra pressue, and often, pain is the result.

What Should We Do About Weather-Related Joint Pain?

Pain in joints doesn't just come from rain. In one survey of 200 people with osteoarthritis in their knee, researchers found that every 10-degree drop in temperature -- as well as low barometric pressure --corresponded to a rise in arthritis pain.[1]

There are a few things that can be done to reduce the impact of weather-related joint pain.

First, try to stay warm. If pain tends to surface when temperatures drop suddenly, try to keep your joints from experiencing the sudden drop. This may mean dipping into a warm bath, layering clothing, or pulling on a pair of cozy socks. Paraffin wax and heating pads are also a good option for keeping joints warm.

Try anti-inflammatory medications. While it's true that NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) shouldn't be used incessantly, when flare-ups occur, they can be a great option for reducing pain and discomfort and allowing for rest.

Maintain a healthy weight. We know it seems like "losing weight" is a standard go-to for healthcare providers. But the truth is, achieving and maintaining an healthy weight is significant in overall health and certainy contributes to joint health. You might be thinking, "My joints hurt.
